In April of 2000, Larry Kirwan, lead singer of NYC's most irreverent Irish rock band, Black 47, asked me to sit in for a few shows until they could find a replacement for Chris Byrne, who had just left. I was honored to play with Larry and Black 47- these guys walk the walk and can definitely talk the talk. Other bands claim to be "fiercely independent" and flying in the face of current trends, but so often that's just record label hype and marketing. Black 47 is the real deal. These pics were taken at Connolly's Pub in mid-town, NYC in May, 2000.
Beatin' the goat during 'James Connolly,' Larry Kirwan's powerful ballad about the legendary Irish patriot and socialist, while Fred Parcells stands by for the big finish.
"chillin on the uilleans" I remember a few years back, when I first moved to NYC, hearing Black 47's "Funky Ceili" on the radio while I was bussing tables in a Manhattan bistro. Never dreamt I'd be up on stage playin' it with them--aint life funny? Visit The Official Black 47 Website! Photographs Courtesy Black 47 Fans [ Menu ] |
